At our university, attendance at lectures is highly recommended in relation to the teaching method, which entails assessing your progress. The educational rules for the various programmes precisely and specifically establish which educational activities have required attendance and which do not.
If you know you cannot attend a course full time, you can dilute your course of studies according to your needs and available time by requesting (through the Plan of Studies, which is annual and mandatory) attendance for a variable number of credits between 30 and 80. The amount of university tuition fees and contributions also varies according to the requested number of ECTS credits.
We also point out the Online Engineering of Computing Systems course if you cannot dedicate 100% of your time to studying and are interested in a degree course in Engineering of Computing Systems.
Laurea and Laurea Magistrale degree courses are disciplined by educational rules.
The educational rules of a programme define its mission and goals, courses, their value in ECTS credits, curricula, teachings, and attendance requirements.
Teaching at the Politecnico is organized to ensure students’ cultural and professional training. The different educational activities are composed of: lectures, recitations, labs, projects, seminars, internships, exams, and theses.
Schools are academic structures that organize educational activities related to the study programmes. Contact your School with regard to lectures, exams and final exams, programme tracks, and other aspects of educational activities. Programmes entail the Laurea (1st level) and Laurea Magistrale (2nd level) degree courses offered by the different schools.
An ECTS credit is a measure of time that defines the amount of educational work required to prepare for an exam.
Each course has a certain number of ECTS credits associated with it. To earn the total number of credits for each course, you must pass the exam.
One ECTS credit equal 25 hours of overall commitment for a student. These 25 hours encompass different educational activities, including independent study. A student is conventionally considered to be able to dedicate 1500 hours per year to studies, for a total of 60 ECTS credits/year.
A Laurea is obtained by earning 180 ECTS credits (= 3 years); the Laurea Magistrale is obtained by earning an additional 120 ECTS credits (= 2 years).
In the current university system, the programmes are organized on two levels:
• First level: Laurea (3 years)
• Second level: Laurea Magistrale (2 years)
Single-cycle degree courses maintain the educational structure and duration (5 years) they had before the reform, since they are already in line with European standards. At the Politecnico di Milano you will find a single-cycle five-year Laurea Magistrale course in Architectural Engineering.
